The forest officials on Thursday as a part of Operation Gajendra to drive away the nine elephants to their natural habitat in Orissa used tranquilizers to make three elephants semi conscious. B Chowdhury, an expert in this type of operation and tackling elephants menace guided the officials in sedating the elephants that might include the tusk-less male elephant 'Makana', the most aggressive in the herd. The other two tuskers are female and all of there were lying in a state of semi consciousness in Toorpuvalasa village of Jiyyaammavalasa in Vizianagaram district. District Forest Officer, BV Ramana Babu speaking to media said that the sedated elephants would be bound by iron chains as such a move would create a scare in the remaining six elephants. Following this, efforts would be made to guide them to their natural habitat, Lakheri Wild Life Sanctuary in Orissa. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, SK Das and other top officials are supervising the operation. Meanwhile, PMJ Babu, Revenue Divisional Officer, Palakonda heading the control room in Palakonda said that steps were taken to alert people in villages which are likely to be crossed by the elephants on their way back to the forest area.
