Protest against Sompeta Thermal Power Plant

The Paryavarana Parirakshana Sangham led a six-year protest against the proposed set up of the Thermal Power Project in Sompeta by the Nagarjuna Construction Company. The protest started in 2009 when the then government has issued GO 1109 allowing the set up of a thermal power plant at Sompeta. The relay hunger strikes by the activists against the thermal plant which started in 2009 continue for 2166 days in a row and ended on November 9, 2015. The agitation continued even during the time of Phailin and Hudhud cyclones.

On 9 November 2015, Labour Minister K Atchan Naidu said the government scrapped GO 1109 and assured that the government would allow only eco-friendly projects in the Beela area.
