The Thotapalli project will cater to the irrigation needs of the ayacut in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram covering 1.24 lakh acres. It will cover the irrigation needs of 10 mandals in Vizianagaram and 7 in Srikakulam. A 117-m long canal is planned to take the waters to the fields.

The project was initiated in 2003 at an estimated cost of Rs. 450 crore. The budget was escalated to Rs. 775 crore in 2012.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has launched the first phase of the project on 11 September 2015. As of October 2015, the Nagavali water is still yet to reach the fields in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram. Poor coordination between Irrigation and revenue officials as well as the delay in land acquisition are said to be the major obstacles. Rs. 49 crore has been allocated by the government for land acquisition. According to the officials, 900 acres in Srikakulam and 200 acres in Vizianagaram needs to be acquisitioned for the project to take off.
